House Remodeling

By Mark Chapman

The renovation of old property requires three things; patience, dedication, and more money than you thought. Having gone through it personally, and spoken to others who have, this would appear to be a universal truth.

What You See is What You Get

The vast majority of old property in Ireland consists of stone buildings, with walls from ½ to one metre thick. These walls are often damp, there seldom being a damp course. Roofs are either slated, thatched or covered in corrugated iron, occasionally corrugated asbestos, which is expensive to remove.

The first thing to consider in the existing condition of the building, and what needs changing. A sound, slated roof is the greatest asset of all, as water leaking into the building will invariably cause damage. It may be that and entire interior will need removing, including internal walls, ceilings, and the existing floor. This is an advantage as a more accurate costing can be achieved.
